Hmmmm.
So I looked at the “want ads” online for clerical/admin and, well, it was a bit depressing. I realize that smaller cities don’t have as many high ranking CEO types that want someone to get their coffee and place their calls so finding Mr. Right (Boss) could be challenging. And I feel a bit out of practice. I’m proficient at most computer programs, but I haven’t used PowerPoint in 10 years.
So I’m nervous.
And I’ve yet to hear about an in-company transfer. I know it’s only been a week, but, eh, not feeling real “safe” at the moment.
So I sent an email to the old boss lady (who I didn’t much like – as she was LOUD) asking for her help. She’s super-politically connected and (maybe, hopefully, God I PRAY) could hook me up with someone up there. Hell, the, uh, First Lady of CA happens to keep an office here at our offices…so possibly I could get in someplace.
I interned for a lobbyist back in college (i.e. picked his drunk ass up from Brennan’s across from the Capital and drove him home) and by college I mean, well, the occasional course here and there.
I don’t allow myself to think, “oh shit, shoulda graduated!” Because I don’t honestly think I’d rather be doing anything else. Not to mention half the assistants around have a degree (in something terribly useful, like underwater filmmaking.)
For all my occasional complaining, I want to do precisely what I do. Maybe a bit more. I want predictable hours, occasional fun projects (like fundraisers or events), and a comfortably stable company or organization.
So I freshened up my resume just now and, honestly, I feel a little better after listing my accomplishments. I tend to sell myself and my experience short in my head. I can do a lot. Not to mention I’ve worked at a premier investment bank and now a worldwide shopping mall superpower! I’ve got over 10 years experience and while chubby as hell I can SO look the part.
But I still wanna work at the maaaalll (in our regional office at the downtown mall.) It’s like all the benefits of being a retail slut – shopping on the lunch hour and, um, shopping on the lunch hour – without the drudgery of being in retail. Pleaaaaase!!!!
